Fly fishing, yak rafting, horse riding - endless empty land and unique culture. Mongolia for me captures the true spirit of adventurous travel. I have so many happy memories of my time in Mongolia it is hard to start describing them.

Precious memories are forever wedged into my regurgitated travel snap shots. Such as sneaking outside of a ger in early evening to find a lunar eclipse in progress! The broad sky and the shadows of the gers and the mountains were magic. Seeing an eagle swoop down and capture a marmot as we galloped by on horses. Drinking horse's whey as a huge storm approached a family's ger that we were sheltering in. Swiss tourists singing songs around a campfire as they ate huge wedges of meat with glistening faces.

Naadam Festival has been one of my highlights of travelling in Asia. The stamina and resilence of the young Mongolian girls and boys completing in the 15 - 35 km horse race was unforgettable. We watched a father chase after his 5 year old son on foot with words of encouragement. It was a trans formative experience for me to see these families tough it out with so much courage.

Drunk men on horse back arriving at the local bar, the amazing spectacle of the eagle wresting and being in the middle of the celebration of a nation was incredible and I would recommend everyone to see this for themselves.

If New York is famous for their bagels, in San Francisco it’s definitely sourdough bread. It has a crispy outer crust, soft and chewy in the inside. The yeasty sourdough starter gives it a distinct tang. Boudin bakery is the city’s most famous bakery when it comes to sourdough bread. In fact, they can trace their starter to more than 150 years, giving their bread so much flavor.

If you are purchasing bread to take with home with you, it would be worthwhile to visit the main bakery at 10th and Geary and buy bread that came straight from the oven. I usually like to eat in one of their cafes though because I can have the bread with some of my favorite classic San Francisco cuisine. I usually order the Best of Boudin which is a combination of soup and half a sandwich. Top of the list would be the rich and creamy clam chowder in a bread bowl partnered with a crab cake sandwich. Yum! I get hungry just thinking about it.

Too bad the nearest Boudin is 8,000 miles away or I would go eat there as often as I can.

The interior is all timber and exposed brick, small spaces are partioned with hemp rope dividers and the chairs alternate between cushioned benches along the wallks and low stools.

The wine list is eclectic with a great range of style and price, sure to suit any taste and budget. It's chosen by Tim who owns the fantastic independent liuor outlet in the shop on the corner. They have a limited number of bottles open to buy by the glass, and if you get there early you get to choose.

The food is reasonably priced and served in sizes to share. Mostly tapas style, you can get one for a snack or a few if your famished. They offer one main meal per day.

Hanoi was quieter than Ho Chi Minh with less cars and bikes and crowds.

Kids over three can go in tandem with parents. This is a great mix of scenery and family adventure.

We took the family here and thought it was a great place to see animals from Indonesia and round the world. The kids loved the safari drive where they saw lots of different animals from elephants, lions, crocodiles, hippo's, gazelles to Komodo dragons. There were Sumatran White Tigers and a interesting bird show.

We got up close to snakes and were able to get photos holding an Orangutan and patting a 5 month old leopard. The food in the restaurant was excellent and afterwards we took the kids to the pool and the water slides in the park to cool down.

It is about an hour from Kuta over on the eastern or Sanur side of the island.

When we thinking Thailand, we automatically thing about the Grand Palace with its gilded architecture and the different temples that house different version of Buddha. The Dusit Palace is one tourist spot that doesn’t get visited by the majority of the tourists.

Situated in the farther district of Bangkok, one can get to to the Dusit Palace by taking a riverboat to Thewit pier followed by a 20-minute walk. After seeing all the different Thai palaces and temples, they can start to look alike. Dusit Palace is a welcome respite to this. It’s architecture is European inspired. Vimanmek Mansion looks like a villa. Built against a background of manicured lawns and gardens, the Anantasamakhom Throne Hall, with its domes and bay windows, looks like a castle or manor house in Italy.

While Siam was never conquered, it would seem that the royal family appreciated and was influenced by the culture of the Westerners. It’s another piece in Thailand’s history and should not be missed.
